"Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul alike."
John Muir - Scottish mystic and explorer
John Muir was right - everyone needs the opportunity to break away from the rush of daily life to retreat into the mountains or to look out over a beautiful panorama, taking time to reflect, pray and rest.
Highland Retreats can offer two small cottages in which to do just that.
What We Can Offer
Available for private retreats, our cottages can welcome up to three people in private rooms, and for short or long stays, as suits your retreat requirements.
Perhaps you want to come and just be alone.
Perhaps you are a group of two or three who wish to be on retreat together, or make a group retreat directing one another.
If you would like to bring your own retreat director and need more space we have additional accommodation available in our Loft Apartment, adjacent to our home in Onich, which is 10 miles from the retreat cottages.
There are many possibilities.
Our Retreat Space
Garbhein Mountain Cottages are a pair of 19th century highland whitewashed cottages, originally a deerstalkers cottage and his pony shed, but now modernised and refurbished to a high standard and very comfortable.
The larger cottage, Garbhein Cottage, has two bedrooms and the small cottage, The Byre, has one bedroom. They can be booked together or separately.
Garbhein Cottage has one bedroom on the ground floor and one upstairs, and The Byre is all on one floor.
All bedrooms have a king-size bed and a private bathroom, access to a fully equipped kitchen, and a sitting room.
We offer these retreat spaces on a self-catering basis, so no meals are provided, but each space has a fully equipped modern kitchen, and there are supermarkets close by.
The cottages are difficult to reach by public transport and there are no easy walks in the immediate vicinity - the paths lead straight onto the mountain. So access to a car is highly recommended.
